The Game Changer
The Proton X50 is one of the most anticipated vehicles in Malaysia. This B-segment compact SUV from the Malaysian car maker is expected continue the brand’s top spot in the local SUV market, now led by the larger Proton X70. Prior to its official launch in late October 2020, the X50 had received more than 20,000 orders two weeks into its initial booking period although pricing has not been announced.

The national car maker has confirmed that the Proton X50 will come in four variants, all powered by 1.5 litre turbocharged three-cylinder engines with dual variable valve timing technology. The engines are a joint development by Geely and Volvo. The difference between the engines is the first three variants (Standard, Executive and Premium) use multi-point port injection while the Flagship model uses direct injection (TGDi) for the driver who wants more performance. The engine power for each is 150PS and 226Nm of torque, and 177PS and 255Nm respectively. Standard across the model range is the seven-speed wet dual clutch automatic transmis-sion (DCT) with manual control. However, there are no paddle shifters available on any variant.

Premium Design

The Proton X50 may be based on the Geely Binyue / Coolray but it incorporates some local design and buyer preference. It bears Proton’s signature ‘Infinite Weave’ pattern on the front grille with the red ‘Ethereal Bow’ highlighted in red.

There are six exciting exterior colours to choose from to suit individual preferences - Snow White, Armour Silver, Jet Grey, Ocean Blue, Citric Orange and Passion Red. Furthermore, the Flagship comes in a two-tone paint scheme with a metallic black ‘floating’ roof. The top two variants use 18-inch alloy wheels while the others have slightly smaller 17-inch alloys.

The X50’s lustrous paint can be protected to maintain its showroom shine with a car coating solution from Ecoat. The specially for-mulated paint protection helps to keep the paint looking new by adding a hard nano layer to shield against scratches, light dents, and chemicals. Ecoat also has different high quality formulations specific for the protection of the wheels, lights and body trim, thus re-ducing cleaning time.

Unique Interior

Like the exterior design elements, the cabin is also inspired by the fighter jet. The cockpit layout is called the ‘Enveloping Cockpit’. It is designed so that the driver feels like they are piloting a jet rather than an SUV. Even the shape of the aircond vents are reminis-cent of jet thrusters.

The Standard variant has fabric seats, while the other variants have leatherette (synthetic leather) seats. However, the Premium and Flagship variants also has a red and black interior colour scheme, on the seats, dashboard and doors. The dashboard and door panels also make use of soft touch materials for a more premium look and feel.

With Ecoat’s special high tech products, the X50’s upholstery and cabin trim can be kept clean and looking new. The protective barrier provided by the Ecoat solution not only helps to keep water stains and spills away from the seats, but also prevents damage and fad-ing from sun exposure.
